Wild Horse Nine follows CIA agents on Easter Island
Martin McDonagh’s dark comedy Wild Horse Nine follows two CIA agents on Easter Island in 1973 as one confronts his illness and the consequences of his work. Starring John Malkovich as Chris and Sam Rockwell as Lee, the film is scheduled to open in theaters on November 6, 2026. Chris, who has terminal cancer and a failing memory, travels with Lee from Santiago to the remote island, where he has long wanted to see its monumental stone figures, known as moai. Their bureau chief, MJ, played by Steve Buscemi, has also tasked Lee with keeping watch on Chris, who is preparing a memoir that could disclose sensitive information about the agency’s past. The film’s central tension grows from Chris’s willingness to speak openly about the CIA and its activities. He befriends two Chilean students, played by Mariana di Girolamo and Ailín Salas, and hints at the approaching military coup in Chile. The story places the agents’ trip against the political upheaval of 1973 while following Chris’s attempts to make sense of his life and his relationship with Lee. Reviews describe the film as a dark comedy that mixes profane exchanges with reflections on mortality, memory and responsibility....
