WhatsApp rolls out new search shortcut for iOS chats and channels

Published 18 September 2026

WhatsApp is rolling out a new contextual search shortcut for iOS users, designed to streamline the process of finding messages within chats, groups, and channels. The feature, which began a gradual rollout on September 17, 2026, appears as a button at the top of the screen when users scroll upward through a conversation, providing direct access to the existing search interface. Previously, initiating a search within a specific WhatsApp conversation on an iPhone required a multi-step detour. Users had to tap the contact or group name at the top of the chat, select the search option from the chat information screen, and then return to the conversation in search mode. The new shortcut eliminates this navigation, allowing users to tap the contextual button and immediately begin typing a keyword to find matching messages without leaving the chat. The button is designed to be unobtrusive, appearing only when a user scrolls up to view older messages and disappearing again when they return to the most recent messages at the bottom of the conversation. This contextual behavior keeps the chat interface clean while making the search function more accessible when needed.
