WhatsApp launches bill payments in India

WhatsApp has launched a new bill payment feature in India, allowing users to manage and pay household and utility bills directly within the messaging application. The service, which began rolling out on Thursday, September 3, 2026, aims to simplify financial tasks by eliminating the need to switch between multiple apps. The feature is powered by Bharat Connect, formerly known as the Bharat Bill Payment System, and offers access to 22,722 billers across 30 categories. These include common expenses such as electricity, gas, and water, as well as FASTag, insurance premiums, credit card dues, and loan repayments. Users can complete transactions using UPI, debit cards, or credit cards. To access the service, users tap on the rupee icon located at the top of the WhatsApp home screen. From there, they can select a bill category and a specific biller, enter their account details, and view the outstanding amount. The platform also allows users to review past payments and track upcoming bills. A key convenience is the ability to manage multiple accounts under a single biller, which can be useful for users paying for different properties or family members.
