Western powers push IAEA to report Iran to UN

The United States, Britain, France, and Germany are pressing the International Atomic Energy Agency's Board of Governors to report Iran to the United Nations Security Council over its nuclear program. The move, expected to be formalized next week, would mark the first such referral of Iran in two decades. Diplomats said the four Western powers are seeking a resolution that would escalate concerns over Tehran's nuclear obligations and its refusal to fully account for its enriched uranium stockpile. This action follows months of mounting alarm over Iran's restrictions on IAEA inspectors' access to damaged nuclear sites and its failure to provide reliable information about its uranium inventory. The IAEA has stated it has lost "continuity of knowledge" regarding Iran's nuclear material after inspectors were withdrawn amid military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in 2025. Tehran's subsequent suspension of cooperation has further complicated the agency's oversight. Western governments contend that Iran's lack of cooperation makes it impossible to verify whether its enriched uranium remains under peaceful control.
