West Virginia Woman Charged After Husband Left on Toilet for 19 Hours Dies

A 75-year-old West Virginia woman has been arrested and charged with abuse or neglect of an incapacitated adult after allegedly leaving her husband on a toilet for approximately 19 hours, an ordeal investigators say contributed to his death. Margaret Louise Rog was taken into custody on September 15 by the Monongalia County Sheriff's Office. According to court documents and investigators, Rog's 76-year-old husband, who suffered from dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and legal blindness, went to the bathroom at their home at around 3 p.m. on August 20. When he was unable to stand up on his own, Rog allegedly did not call for assistance. Instead, she reportedly left him unattended and unresponsive in the bathroom without food, water, or his prescribed medications. The situation persisted until the following morning, around 10 a.m., when a speech therapist arrived for a scheduled in-home visit. The therapist found the man in a dangerously poor condition and called 911. Emergency crews transported him to a hospital, where he was diagnosed with multiple serious conditions, including heart failure, respiratory failure, a pulmonary embolism, hypernatremia, sepsis, and rhabdomyolysis.
