Waymo to Launch Robotaxi Service in Singapore in 2028

Waymo, the autonomous driving unit of Alphabet, has announced plans to launch its first commercial robotaxi service in Southeast Asia, starting in Singapore in 2028. The company will begin with manual driving and testing in 2027 to adapt its system to local conditions, with the launch subject to regulatory approval. An initial fleet of all-electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles will arrive in Singapore in the coming months. Throughout 2027, trained specialists will manually drive these vehicles to map roads and adapt the Waymo Driver to Singapore's road geometry and monsoon weather patterns. This adaptation focuses on improving the vehicle's sensors, including custom lidar, radar, and cameras for 360-degree detection of pedestrians, cyclists, and active mobility users, which are especially important on Singapore's roads. Public rides through the Waymo app are set to begin in 2028. Waymo is partnering with Singapore's Ministry of Transport and Land Transport Authority for this expansion.
