Waymo reports fewer injury crashes across 271 million miles

Waymo says its autonomous vehicles were involved in 841 fewer injury-causing crashes than human-driver benchmarks across 271 million fully autonomous miles through the end of June 2026, according to a company safety analysis covering five U.S. metropolitan areas. The analysis includes operations in Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Francisco. Waymo characterized the estimated difference as an 82% reduction in injury-causing crashes. For crashes resulting in serious injury or worse, the company reported 95 fewer incidents than the human-driver benchmark, describing that as 20 times fewer. The company also reported lower comparisons for crashes involving vulnerable road users: 93% fewer injury-causing crashes involving pedestrians, 86% fewer involving cyclists and 82% fewer involving motorcyclists. Those figures, like the broader comparisons, come from Waymo’s own analysis and should be understood within the locations and mileage it studied. The results do not establish how the comparisons would apply to other places or driving conditions.
