Wawrinka loses to Berrettini in final Grand Slam match

Published 1 September 2026

Stan Wawrinka, the three-time Grand Slam champion, played his final major tournament match on Monday, August 31, 2026, losing to Italy's Matteo Berrettini in the first round of the US Open. The 41-year-old Swiss veteran, who will retire at the end of the season, was defeated 7-6(4), 7-6(3), 6-0 on the Grandstand court at Flushing Meadows, ending a glittering Grand Slam career that included winning the US Open title in 2016. The match was a competitive battle for the first two sets, with Wawrinka repeatedly threatening to turn the tide. After falling behind early, he broke Berrettini's serve to love to level the first set and later earned a set point in a marathon game.
