Volvo Doubles Electric Range for 2028 XC60 and XC90 Hybrids

Volvo has unveiled significantly updated versions of its XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrid SUVs, claiming they will offer the longest all-electric range of any plug-in hybrids sold in the United States. The 2028 model year vehicles feature a more than doubled battery capacity, enabling an EPA-estimated 78 miles of electric-only driving for the XC60 and 73 miles for the XC90. The range increase is attributed to a new, larger 37.9 kWh usable battery pack, up from 18.8 kWh in the current models. Volvo states this allows most owners to handle daily commutes and errands entirely on electric power. The XC60 is projected to deliver a total range of 590 miles on a full charge and tank of gas, while the XC90 is rated at 560 miles. Both SUVs retain their turbocharged four-cylinder engines and electric motors, producing a combined 455 horsepower through all-wheel drive. The XC60 accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, with the larger XC90 following at 5.0 seconds. The updated powertrain is scheduled to enter production in fall 2026, with U.S. sales beginning in early 2027. Alongside the powertrain upgrade, the XC60 receives a mid-cycle refresh.
