Volkswagen Warns of Critical Restructuring, 50,000 Jobs at Risk

Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume has warned that the company and Germany's broader automotive industry are facing the "biggest upheaval in their history," with the automaker currently weighing significant job cuts and potential factory closures as part of a sweeping restructuring effort. In an interview published on the company's intranet, Blume described Volkswagen's position as "more than critical," citing global headwinds, Chinese competition, and an overproduction of 500,000 vehicles annually in Europe as key challenges. In the coming days, Blume is scheduled to meet with employees at Volkswagen's headquarters in Wolfsburg, as well as at plants in Zwickau and Emden, to provide updates on the company's plans. While he stated that no final decision has been made on closing plants, he reiterated that the facilities in Emden, Hannover, Zwickau, and Neckarsulm currently have no clear path to remaining profitable through the 2030s. Blume emphasized that any closures would be considered only as a "last and most expensive solution.
