Volkswagen plant to produce Israeli defense parts

Volkswagen will convert one of its German factories to produce defense equipment for Israeli company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, marking a significant shift in industrial focus for the automaker and Germany. The Volkswagen plant in Osnabrück, located in northwestern Germany, will transition from vehicle manufacturing to the development and production of components for air defense systems. The decision comes as Volkswagen phases out vehicle production at the Osnabrück site, a process expected to conclude by summer 2027. The German carmaker has agreed to sell the plant to a consortium that includes the investment firm Aurelius Capital, which will be the majority owner, and the German state of Lower Saxony. This consortium plans to collaborate with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems on initial air defense projects. The move is part of a broader trend of increased defense spending and rearmament across Europe, driven by evolving security concerns. Officials stated that the technology manufactured in Germany would contribute to strengthening the security of Germany and Europe.
