Volkswagen Mission Efficiency concept sets three world records
Volkswagen has unveiled the Mission Efficiency, a near-production electric vehicle concept that set three world records for aerodynamics and energy consumption during a real-world drive. The car, based on the same MEB platform and production-intended components as the upcoming ID. Polo, is presented as a technology demonstrator rather than a confirmed production model. During a verified drive from Wolfsburg, Germany, to Vienna, Austria, the Mission Efficiency covered 1,278 kilometers (794 miles) on a single charge, arriving with 164 kilometers of range remaining. The Record Institute Germany certified the achievement, which included a record drag coefficient of 0.158 for a road-approved car. The vehicle also set records for energy consumption, achieving 6.89 kWh per 100 kilometers without charging losses during the trip. The concept uses a 54.9 kWh battery and a 99 kW electric motor, identical to those in the ID. Polo, though software unlocks an additional 2.9 kWh of usable capacity. Its teardrop-shaped body features active cooling flaps, clad rear wheels, a fully enclosed underbody, and specially designed low-rolling-resistance tires from Continental.
