Virginia Tech Ends Maryland's Nonconference Streak With 35-26 Win

Virginia Tech defeated Maryland 35-26 on Saturday, ending the Terrapins' 20-game nonconference winning streak, the longest in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The victory marked the first road win for new Virginia Tech coach James Franklin. Quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer led the Hokies' efficient offensive performance, throwing three touchdown passes and running for another score, all in the first half. He completed 31 of 39 passes for 314 yards without an interception. Grunkemeyer's performance helped Virginia Tech build a commanding 35-14 lead by the third quarter. The Hokies scored touchdowns on five of their first six possessions. Their opening drive covered 75 yards, culminating in a 14-yard touchdown reception by tight end Luke Reynolds. Grunkemeyer later added a rushing touchdown on a third-and-goal play from the 18-yard line. Jeffrey Overton Jr. contributed with a 49-yard touchdown reception and a 2-yard rushing score. Maryland quarterback Malik Washington threw for 359 yards and three touchdowns, completing 30 of 43 passes. His efforts, including two fourth-quarter touchdown passes, helped the Terrapins rally but could not overcome the early deficit.
