Max Verstappen has confirmed that he held serious discussions with both Mercedes and McLaren regarding potential moves before ultimately extending his contract with Red Bull through the 2030 Formula 1 season. The reigning world champion revealed the extent of these talks in an interview with BBC Sport, stating that he took all conversations seriously and respectfully. Red Bull announced Verstappen's contract extension, which keeps him with the team until at least the end of 2030, ahead of his home Grand Prix. This decision came after a challenging 2026 season for Red Bull, during which the team had not yet secured a Grand Prix victory. Verstappen acknowledged that while speculation about his future was rife, the discussions with rival teams were concrete. "Of course, any kind of chat you take seriously. They're all very respectful chats. There's nothing wrong with that," Verstappen stated.
