Vande Mataram Row Sparks Political Clash in Kashmir

A political controversy has erupted in Jammu and Kashmir following the full rendition of the national song "Vande Mataram" at the inaugural ceremony of the region's first international film festival. The event, held on Monday evening in Srinagar, was attended by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah, who, along with other leaders, stood respectfully for all six stanzas of the song. This act has led to a sharp exchange between the National Conference and its ally, the Congress party. The Congress has objected to the full rendition, advising its alliance partner to adhere to a truncated version of the song. Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal stated that the full version of "Vande Mataram" does not align with India's syncretic and pluralist ethos, citing historical figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru who, according to the party, endorsed a shorter rendition. The Congress maintains that this approach was deliberately chosen to prevent the song from being communalized and to uphold the secular character of the Republic.
