US to admit mainly Afrikaners as refugees in 2027

The Trump administration has notified Congress that it plans to set a refugee admissions ceiling of 17,500 for fiscal year 2027, with the majority of places allocated to Afrikaners from South Africa, according to a State Department notice sent on Tuesday. The notice marks a significant shift in U.S. refugee policy. Refugee admissions from most parts of the world have been largely restricted since President Donald Trump paused the program upon taking office in January 2025, while admissions for Afrikaners have been prioritized. The new fiscal year begins in October. The ceiling represents an increase from 7,500, a level the administration had earlier raised for South African refugees through an emergency determination submitted to Congress. In the notice, the State Department said Afrikaners face seizure of agricultural property without compensation, government policies affecting employment, education and business, and rhetoric contributing to what it described as disproportionate violence against racial minorities. Trump has previously characterized the treatment of white South Africans as a "genocide.
