US Redirects $52 Million in Military Aid to Latin America

The U.S. State Department has notified Congress of a plan to redirect $52 million in foreign military financing from four countries in Europe and the Middle East to four nations in Latin America. The reprogramming shifts funds from Slovakia, North Macedonia, Tunisia, and Iraq to Panama, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia. The State Department stated the redirected money would be used to combat narcoterrorism, secure the Panama Canal, and prevent adversaries from establishing strategic footholds in the Western Hemisphere. Officials noted the region has historically received less U.S. military assistance than other areas and that the previous allocation did not align with the administration's prioritization of the hemisphere. The move follows a recent diplomatic tour by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who visited Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru last week. During the trip, Rubio pledged additional support to the governments of those nations. The reprogramming does not end all foreign military financing for Tunisia, Iraq, North Macedonia, or Slovakia, but the exact remaining amounts for those countries were not immediately disclosed.
