US Marks 25th Anniversary of September 11 Attacks

The United States is marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks this week, with commemorations, museum exhibitions, and service events held across the country as the day increasingly passes from lived memory into history for younger Americans. Nearly 3,000 people were killed when hijacked planes struck the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania, where passengers on United Airlines Flight 93 overtook the hijackers. An Ipsos poll conducted Aug. 21 to 23 among 1,013 U.S. adults, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points, found that 47 percent of respondents named 9/11 among the most important historic events of their lifetimes, and 75 percent said they remember where they were when they learned of the attacks. Adults aged 18 to 24 and some 25-year-olds were not yet born when the attacks occurred. The passage of time is visible in how the attacks are preserved.
