United Russia on track for supermajority in wartime election

Russia's ruling United Russia party is on track to secure a commanding victory in the country's first parliamentary election since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, according to preliminary results from the Central Election Commission. With over half of precincts counted, the party led by President Vladimir Putin had won approximately 57.5% to 57.9% of the party-list vote, positioning it to retain a two-thirds constitutional supermajority in the State Duma. The election, which concluded on Sunday, September 20, 2026, was conducted over three days and marked the first parliamentary vote since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. It took place in a tightly controlled political environment where genuine opposition was effectively excluded. The liberal Yabloko party, the only registered party that publicly criticized the war, was barred from the federal party-list ballot by the Supreme Court in August, though some of its candidates ran in single-seat districts. Preliminary results showed the Communist Party in second place with about 14.2% of the vote, followed by the nationalist LDPR with 10.7%, New People with 9.7%, and A Just Russia with 6.6%.
