UN Security Council to hold AI session with US and Chinese firms

The UN Security Council will convene a session focused on artificial intelligence risks on Wednesday, during the UN General Assembly week in New York, with executives from leading US and Chinese AI companies invited to brief the 15-member body. France, which holds the rotating council presidency this month, is calling the meeting. Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI, will attend in person, while Dario Amodei of Anthropic will participate remotely, according to confirmed speaker arrangements. The lineup also includes Yoshua Bengio, cochair of the UN's artificial intelligence advisory panel, and Clement Delangue, chief executive of Hugging Face. Chinese companies DeepSeek and Moonshot have received invitations to deliver statements. DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng is not currently expected to attend, though people familiar with the arrangements said plans could still change. Neither DeepSeek nor Moonshot responded to requests for comment. A concept note circulated by France highlights the potential malicious use of AI and the risk of losing control over advanced models as focus areas for the session.
