UN Rights Chief Warns AI Poses Existential Risk
Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, warned on Monday, September 7, 2026, that advanced artificial intelligence could pose an existential risk to humanity. Speaking at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Türk called for the international community to establish clear boundaries, or "red lines," on what AI technology should never be permitted to do. Türk described the threats posed by AI as unprecedented and questioned the lack of action on governance despite widespread acknowledgment of its necessity. He highlighted concerns about the concentration of power, stating that a handful of individuals within a few companies hold almost unlimited influence over AI development. He specifically named OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and Google as companies central to this concentration. The High Commissioner indicated his office intends to engage directly with these AI firms, rather than solely relying on traditional government-to-government diplomacy, citing the rapid pace of AI development. He urged countries involved in AI development and its supply chains to agree on these international red lines.
