UMG and Sony Sue Suno Again Over 60,202 Recordings

Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment have filed a second copyright infringement lawsuit against AI music generation company Suno, alleging the unauthorized use of 60,202 sound recordings to train its models. The complaint, filed on September 18, 2026, in the U.S. District Court in Massachusetts, claims that Suno's recently released v6 model continues to infringe by building on outputs from previous models trained on unlicensed data. The labels argue that v6 is "fruit of the same poisoned tree" because it was trained on user interactions and outputs from Suno's earlier models, which were themselves derived from copied recordings. Suno has stated that v6 was trained on licensed content and user interactions, but the lawsuit contends that this does not eliminate infringement but merely launders it. Central to the case is Suno's licensing agreements with Warner Music Group, BMG, and Believe. The labels cite these deals as evidence that a functioning market exists for licensing sound recordings to train AI models, undermining Suno's fair use defense.
