Ukraine Parliament to Vote on Prosecutor General Dismissal

Ukraine's parliament is set to vote on the dismissal of Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko after President Volodymyr Zelensky formally requested his removal without delay. The move follows a corruption scandal in Kravchenko's office and his last-minute signing of a notice of suspicion against the head of the country's main anti-corruption bureau. Zelensky announced his request on September 14, stating there is only one path for the prosecutor general's removal from office. A draft resolution for the dismissal was registered in parliament the same day, and the law enforcement committee backed it unanimously. A vote in the Verkhovna Rada is expected on September 15. The crisis stems from an investigation by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutors Office (SAPO). Their probe, dubbed Operation Carthage, uncovered an alleged criminal group within the Prosecutor General's Office that took bribes to protect fraudulent call centers. Investigators allege the scheme laundered more than 30 million hryvnia (approximately $581,000) through property purchases and other valuables.
