UK youth to gain thousands of work experience placements

A new government-backed initiative called "Opening Shift" is set to offer thousands of work experience placements to young people across the United Kingdom, aiming to combat youth unemployment. The program, jointly organized by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and the British Retail Consortium (BRC), involves over 40 major retailers who have committed to providing more than 11,000 placements. The scheme is specifically designed for individuals aged 16 to 24 who are not in education, employment, or training (NEETs) and are claiming Universal Credit. Participants will receive between two and four weeks of hands-on work experience. The initiative is part of a broader effort to create 100,000 jobs for young people by the next general election. Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden stated that the placements are designed to help young people overcome the common barrier of lacking prior work experience. "They are quite often caught in a bind of no experience, no job," McFadden said. "About 60 percent of NEETs have never had a job and this cuts through that." He added that securing such experience significantly increases the chances of obtaining long-term paid employment.
