UK Salmonella outbreak linked to imported eggs, 528 cases

A significant Salmonella outbreak across the United Kingdom has prompted a major investigation by health agencies, with officials linking the infections to imported eggs. As of September 1, 2026, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed a total of 528 cases, an increase of 54 from the previous week. The outbreak is being tracked in three distinct clusters, and two deaths have been recorded. The UKHSA, working with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and other partners, is monitoring three clusters of Salmonella Enteritidis. The largest cluster accounts for 305 infections and one death. A second cluster has 41 cases and one death, while the third involves 182 infections. Investigations have identified a common link to imported eggs, though the exact source remains under active inquiry. Cases have been associated with a range of food outlets, including small cafés, restaurants, and takeaway businesses. Hannah Charles, Lead Epidemiologist at the UKHSA, stated that the investigation indicates a link to imported eggs but remains ongoing. "We will continue to follow up cases and investigate any further common sources if they come to light," she said.
