UK Minister Proposes Benefit Cuts or Prison for Parents of Youth Offenders

A UK government minister has proposed that parents could face benefit cuts or even prison sentences if their children commit crimes, as part of a broader crackdown on youth offending. Justice Minister Jake Richards outlined the potential measures in an interview, stating the justice system should hold parents accountable in a proportionate way for ensuring they play their role in keeping communities safe. The proposals are part of a Youth Justice White Paper published in May, which called for strengthening and increasing the use of Parenting Orders. These legal instruments currently allow courts to mandate parents into counselling or guidance to address their child's conduct, with non-compliance carrying fines of up to £1,000. Ministers are now considering reforms that could see the maximum fine increased and, in the most extreme cases, judges given the discretion to impose custodial sentences or dock benefits. Richards, the MP for Rother Valley, said the reforms were needed to address persistent issues with antisocial behaviour.
