UK launches nationwide illegal number plate crackdown

The British government has launched a nationwide crackdown on illegal number plates, funding a new policing team to target drivers using fraudulent registrations and organised crime gangs. The Department for Transport is financing the National Roads Policing Coordination Centre, which will bring together police forces across England to share intelligence, improve collaboration, and enhance data analysis to combat road-based offending. The initiative, announced in early September 2026, includes trials of new detection technology such as specialised goggles designed to identify plates that have been deliberately altered to evade cameras. Illegal number plates, including cloned and "ghost" plates, are frequently used to avoid speeding fines, parking penalties, and clean air zone charges. They also facilitate organised crime by allowing vehicles to move illegal goods while evading law enforcement detection. Vehicles with unreadable plates are harder to track when stolen or linked to serious offences, making it more difficult for police to apprehend criminals.
