UK Food Inflation Set to Peak at 6.4% by Mid-2027
Food price inflation in the United Kingdom is forecast to accelerate significantly over the coming year, with projections indicating a rise to nearly 4% by December 2026 and a peak of 6.4% by mid-2027. This surge is attributed to a confluence of factors including ongoing geopolitical conflicts, extreme weather events, and escalating production costs impacting the food industry. The Food and Drink Federation (FDF), a prominent trade body representing UK food manufacturers, has issued warnings that these pressures could jeopardize food security if not addressed. The federation's latest forecast places year-on-year food and non-alcoholic beverage inflation at 3.9% for December 2026. While this figure is lower than previous, more severe predictions, the FDF anticipates inflation will continue to climb thereafter, reaching its highest point at 6.4% in July 2027. The FDF expects inflation to remain substantially above historical averages throughout the latter half of 2027. Several key drivers are contributing to this outlook. The ongoing conflict in Iran is cited as a major factor, increasing supply chain costs and energy prices.
