UK First to Confirm Starshield Use with $40M SpaceX Spending

Britain has become the first country outside the United States to publicly acknowledge using SpaceX's Starshield military satellite network, spending nearly $40 million on the company's satellite services. The UK Ministry of Defence disclosed the figures in response to a freedom of information request, revealing it operates approximately 1,000 Starshield terminals and 500 standard Starlink terminals. The total expenditure includes about $13 million for Starshield, covering both hardware and airtime, and $16.5 million for Starlink. The ministry began using Starshield airtime on existing Starlink terminals in 2024 and acquired dedicated Starshield terminals in 2025. Starshield provides enhanced encryption, military-specific service terms, higher network priority, and broader geographic coverage compared to the consumer-facing Starlink service. The transition followed SpaceX's mandate that standard Starlink not be used for operational military traffic. A ministry spokesman stated that Starlink technology is not used for military operations, serving instead for morale, welfare, recreation, and training.
