UK Crime Agency Prioritizes Crypto in Economic Crime Fight
The United Kingdom's National Economic Crime Centre (NECC) has elevated cryptoassets to its third highest economic crime priority, signaling a strategic shift towards more proactive intelligence gathering and target generation. The NECC, a unit of the National Crime Agency (NCA), agreed on nine economic crime priorities with the Financial Conduct Authority, the Home Office, and the Treasury. Cryptoassets now rank below only professional enablers, such as corrupt lawyers and accountants, and politically exposed persons, surpassing concerns like cash and money mules. According to the NECC's threat assessment, criminals are making "innovative use" of crypto asset products to evade detection and move illicit value at scale. These laundering networks often cross borders, combining novel and traditional techniques, and many organized crime groups now outsource laundering to dedicated networks for a fee. The agency also noted the emerging use of artificial intelligence, synthetic identities, and automated attacks against financial institutions.
