UK allocates £10bn for 70,000 social and affordable homes

The UK government announced on August 24, 2026, an initial allocation of nearly £10 billion to build over 70,000 social and affordable homes across England, marking the first stage of a decade-long, £39 billion programme. The funding, which adds to a separate £6 billion commitment for London, will be distributed to six mayoral regions outside the capital: Greater Manchester, the West Midlands, North East England, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, and the Liverpool City Region. Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated, "No child should be raised in a hostel room and no family should wait 10 years for a front door of their own.
