UEFA to honor Nepal flood victims before UCL matches

European football's governing body, UEFA, will observe a moment of silence and display a solidarity banner before all UEFA Champions League matches this week to honor victims of the devastating flash floods and landslides that struck Nepal on August 26, 2026. The tribute, announced on Monday, September 7, 2026, aims to express solidarity with those affected by the disaster and support their recovery. The banner will carry the message "You are not alone Nepal." UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin stated that the entire European football family would stand together to express deepest condolences and support to the people of Nepal, wishing them strength and resilience as they continue to recover. The flash floods, triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border, devastated towns and villages in northern and central Nepal. The Bhotekoshi River carried floodwaters downstream, sweeping away homes, vehicles, roads, and bridges, and damaging hydropower projects. The disaster also caused casualties on the Chinese side of the border. According to Nepals National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, the floods have claimed at least 1,355 lives.
