Uber Ordered to Pay $40 Million in Fatal Freeway Drop-Off Case

An arbitrator has ordered Uber Technologies to pay $40 million to the parents of Emily Normandin-Parker, a 23-year-old woman who was killed after being left on a Southern California freeway by her Uber driver. The ruling, issued after a five-day arbitration proceeding, found the ride-hailing company and its driver jointly liable for the fatal incident. The case stems from an event on August 12, 2023, when Normandin-Parker and her friend, Luna Moore, were traveling in an Uber after a night out. According to the arbitration findings, the driver, Vu Tran, pulled over at a gore point on State Route 73 in Orange County after Moore became sick. Tran then left both women at that unsafe location. Normandin-Parker was subsequently struck and killed by another vehicle. Retired Judge Richard A. Stone, serving as the arbitrator, awarded $20 million to each of Normandin-Parker's parents, Carol Normandin and Ken Parker. A separate award of $300,000 was made to Moore.
