U.S. Urges G20 to Adopt Hands-Off Approach to AI Regulation

Published 2 September 2026

The United States urged fellow G20 members on Tuesday to adopt a hands-off approach to regulating artificial intelligence, advocating against the creation of new regulatory bodies and instead promoting a focus on rules for novel situations. The push came at a two-day meeting of industry leaders and commerce ministers in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, hosted by U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and White House tech adviser Michael Kratsios. Kratsios, co-hosting the gathering, called on countries to adopt what he termed the "Carolina Principles," which would see nations avoid writing entirely new regulations for AI.
