U.S. Mint releases $1 Trump coin for 250th anniversary

The U.S. Mint has begun selling and circulating a special edition $1 coin featuring the likeness of President Donald Trump, marking a historic and legally contentious moment in American numismatics. The coins, released on September 2, 2026, commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary, or semiquincentennial, and are the first to feature a sitting president on a circulating coin in modern history. The coin's obverse, or heads side, displays a forward-facing portrait of President Trump, designed by Chief Engraver Joseph Menna and inspired by an official White House photograph. It includes the inscriptions "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the dual date "1776-2026." The reverse, or tails side, features the Presidential Seal with an eagle holding an olive branch and arrows, with the numeral "250" inscribed on the shield to mark the anniversary. The coin is composed primarily of copper, with smaller amounts of zinc, manganese, and nickel, giving it a gold-colored appearance without containing actual gold. The Mint released 250,000 of these coins, which are available for purchase in rolls of 25 for $61.45 and bags of 100 for $154.50, prices significantly above their face value.
