Two Runners Die at Record-Breaking Great North Run

Two 25-year-old male runners from North East England died after collapsing during the 2026 Great North Run, event organisers confirmed on Monday. The deaths occurred during the landmark half marathon, which took place on Sunday, September 14, 2026. The Great Run Company, which organises the event, issued a statement expressing "profound grief" over the tragedy. "It is with deep sadness that The Great Run Company can confirm the death of two participants at yesterday's Great North Run," the statement read. "The two runners, both 25-year-old males from the North East, collapsed at the event, and despite the very best efforts of our medical teams later passed away." Organisers stated that medical response teams deployed along the 13.1-mile course from Newcastle to South Shields acted swiftly, but the runners died despite intensive intervention. "In each case the cause of death will be determined in due course," the company said, adding that no further personal details would be released out of respect for the families. The incident cast a sombre shadow over what was otherwise a record-breaking edition of the world's largest half marathon.
