Two pulled alive from Nepal flood sites

Rescuers in Nepal pulled a Chinese national and a 64-year-old woman alive from separate flood-affected sites on Saturday, September 5, 2026, offering a rare glimmer of hope 10 days after catastrophic flash floods devastated the Himalayan nation. The rescues followed the extraction of two Nepalese workers from a hydropower tunnel on Friday, September 4, as emergency teams intensified their search for hundreds of people still missing and feared trapped underground. The Chinese worker, identified as Lu Haitao, was rescued from approximately 225 meters inside a tunnel at the Upper Trishuli 1 Hydropower Project in Rasuwa district. A joint team of Nepalese military personnel and South Korean disaster response experts conducted the operation. Lu, who had been trapped since the August 26 disaster, was found with no visible injuries but was suffering from mild hypothermia and extreme exhaustion. He was evacuated by helicopter for medical assessment. In a statement to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, Lu described his ordeal, saying he had shouted desperately whenever he saw rescue lights.
