Two Injured as Crane Catches Fire at Mumbai Port

Published 1 September 2026

Two crane operators were injured after a crane caught fire during cargo unloading operations at the BPS Port in Mumbai on August 30, 2026. The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. while the Barbados-flagged vessel Vienna was undergoing discharge of a 140-metric-tonne cargo. The fire was brought under control by the Mumbai Port fire brigade about an hour later. According to police and port officials, the accident unfolded during a complex lifting operation involving two cranes operated by the private firm Barkat Company. The sling attached to the cargo on one crane became imbalanced and came loose, causing the entire load to shift suddenly onto the second crane.
