Two fraternity officers arrested in Madison hazing probe

Madison police are investigating suspected hazing after officers found about 30 partially clothed young men covered in food, condiments and other liquids in the basement of an Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity house on Wednesday evening. Police arrested the fraternity’s president and vice president on misdemeanor allegations of hazing and disorderly conduct. Officers went to the house on Langdon Street at about 8:20 p.m. on September 23 after receiving an anonymous tip, according to police. The basement thermostat was set to 81 degrees, which police said created hot and humid conditions. Most of the young men were 18, police said. Police said several men had visible marks or injuries that could be consistent with being struck or physically assaulted. The reports do not establish how or when those injuries occurred. Officers escorted everyone outside and checked the young men for injuries and signs of incapacitation. Whether anyone required medical treatment was not clear from the available information. Brayden J. Klein and Samuel N. Vane, both 20, were arrested. Police identified Klein as the chapter president and Vane as its vice president.
