Two arrested after house fire kills woman and niece in Middlesbrough

A woman and her seven-year-old niece were killed in a house fire in the Grangetown area of Middlesbrough on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, an incident police are investigating for possible links to a fatal crash on the A66 that killed two police officers and five young men days earlier. Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the blaze. Cleveland Police were called to the fire at an end-of-terrace property on Birchington Avenue at 5:23 a.m. on Wednesday. Natalie McDonald, 34, and her niece, Valentina Foster, were pronounced dead at the scene.
