President Donald Trump on Monday, August 31, called on Congress to immediately pass bipartisan legislation creating a federal tax incentive for film and television production, aiming to reverse a significant exodus of American entertainment projects to foreign countries. In a statement posted to Truth Social, Trump declared Hollywood a "Complete and Total Disaster" and urged lawmakers from both parties to craft a bill to "save the Movie, Television, and Entertainment Business in America." Trump's announcement followed a meeting with actor Jon Voight, whom the president previously appointed as a special ambassador to Hollywood. Voight and other industry figures have advocated for federal tax credits to make the United States more competitive with foreign production hubs like Canada and the United Kingdom. "I am going to suggest that Republicans and Democrats get together, and immediately craft Legislation to save the Movie, Television, and Entertainment Business in America," Trump wrote. He stated that meetings with congressional leaders from both parties are being arranged to advance the proposal. The push comes as domestic production has declined sharply.
