Trump Floats Renaming New Mexico

President Donald Trump posted a map on social media Sunday suggesting a name change for the U.S. state of New Mexico, replacing the word "Mexico" with "America." The post, shared on Truth Social on September 6, 2026, depicted the southwestern state rebranded as "New America." This latest suggestion follows a series of geographical name changes initiated by the former president. In August 2026, Trump officially renamed Lake Ontario to Lake America, a move he linked to an escalating trade dispute with Canada. He stated that the United States could no longer afford to carry Canada financially and suggested that Canada should not be treated as a state if it was not contributing equitably. The renaming of Lake Ontario was accompanied by various social media posts, including videos and AI-generated clips, some of which appeared to be satirical or provocative. Earlier in his second term, Trump had also ordered the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. According to one report, an executive order from January 2025 titled "Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness" also changed the name of Denali in Alaska back to Mount McKinley.
