Trump Expected at Irish Open Atmosphere to Shift

Golfer Rory McIlroy has acknowledged that U.S. President Donald Trump's attendance at the Irish Open will create a different atmosphere, citing increased security and limited crowds, but stated that players will focus on the competition. Trump is expected to visit the tournament at his Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg, County Clare, on Saturday and Sunday, September 12-13, as part of a two-day visit to Ireland. McIlroy, who has played golf with Trump previously, said that while the presence of the U.S. president will make the event feel distinct, the players' objective remains to compete. "It's going to be different with him being here, but we're here to play a golf tournament and it's a good golf course so we'll keep our heads down and play," McIlroy told BBC Northern Ireland. He added that while the logistical challenges and security measures associated with a presidential visit are significant, "if he wants to come and watch the Irish Open, who are we to say no?" Trump's visit is reportedly set to include meetings with Irish President Catherine Connolly and Prime Minister Micheál Martin.
