Trump doubles down on $5,000 dividend promise for GOP midterm win

Published 11 September 2026

President Donald Trump has doubled down on his promise to issue a $5,000 "Trump Dividend" payment to every adult American, a proposal contingent on Republicans retaining control of Congress in the November 2026 midterm elections. The pledge, first announced at a Republican convention in Dallas on Wednesday, has become a central GOP campaign message but has drawn criticism over its estimated $1.2 trillion to $1.3 trillion cost and questions about its legal and fiscal feasibility. In a Truth Social post on Friday, Trump defended the plan, writing, "When I say something, I mean it!" He attributed the potential for the payments to the country's economic growth and investment, stating the dividend "will happen because the People of our Country deserve it." The White House has not released legislative language or a detailed funding mechanism for the proposal. The plan would represent one of the largest direct-payment programs in U.S. history. With approximately 240 million to 270 million adult citizens, the total cost is projected to be between $1.2 trillion and $1.3 trillion.
