Trump Administration Shuts Down 270 Trucking Schools Over Fraud

The Trump administration announced on Monday, August 31, 2026, the emergency shutdown of 270 commercial driving schools as part of what officials described as a major crackdown on fraud and safety violations in the trucking industry. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin made the announcement during a joint press conference in Detroit, Michigan, alongside White House Fraud Task Force Vice Chairman Andrew Ferguson and other officials. Duffy stated that 110 schools were shut down immediately for being the "greatest offenders" in granting commercial driver's licenses (CDLs) to individuals who did not meet federal qualifications, particularly English language proficiency requirements. An additional 160 schools were closed because they lacked proper facilities for driving tests or employed unlicensed instructors. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration chief Derek Barrs explained that each of the 110 primary schools had passed at least 10 drivers who were later cited for English proficiency violations during roadside inspections.
