Tinubu confirms $100,000 reward payment to D'Tigress

Published 11 September 2026

President Bola Tinubu has confirmed that each member of Nigeria's senior women's basketball team, D'Tigress, has received the naira equivalent of $100,000 following the team's victory at the 2025 FIBA Women's AfroBasket tournament, according to a statement issued by the President. The payment completes the presidential reward package promised to the team after their triumph, which included cash awards, national honours and three-bedroom homes in Abuja. Each official received the equivalent of $50,000, the statement said. "Today, the rewards I promised our D'Tigress have been fully redeemed," Tinubu said in the statement. "Each player has received the naira equivalent of $100,000, while each official has received the equivalent of $50,000, completing their package of cash rewards, national honours and three-bedroom homes in Abuja." The President said the process of implementing the rewards took time because the government had to follow procedures required by law. "We had to follow the processes required by law and ensure that every commitment was properly implemented. That took time, but a promise made must be a promise kept," he said.
