ThunderCats Live-Action Film Still in Development

Filmmaker Adam Wingard has confirmed that his long-gestating live-action adaptation of the 1980s animated series "ThunderCats" remains in development, though it is not currently his primary focus. In an interview published this week, Wingard stated the project is "still kicking around" and "not dead," providing the first significant update in years. Wingard, known for directing "Godzilla vs. Kong" and its sequel, was first attached to develop and direct the "ThunderCats" film for Warner Bros. in 2021. He is co-writing the screenplay with frequent collaborator Simon Barrett. In the recent interview, Wingard explained that other projects have taken precedence, but work on the script continued earlier this year. "We did a new draft at the beginning of this year. It wasn't too long ago, and then things got put on hold for this movie Onslaught," he said. "So I don't really have any exciting updates. But it's not dead. It lives. It's just not the number one thing I'm working on right now." The director has previously described the film as a "dream project" and outlined a vision for a hybrid CGI-live action movie that preserves the original cartoon's aesthetic.
