Thailand SEC Issues Crypto Travel Rule with 2027 Deadline
Thailand's Securities and Exchange Commission has finalized a new Crypto Travel Rule for digital asset operators, mandating that firms verify the ownership of self-custodial wallets and transmit detailed sender and beneficiary information with every transfer. The regulation, announced in Bangkok on September 1, 2026, sets a compliance deadline of February 27, 2027, for all covered businesses. The rule requires digital asset service providers to establish internal policies for managing transfer-related risks and to conduct due diligence on customers and counterparties before any transaction. A central provision compels operators to confirm that an individual sending or receiving funds has actual ownership of or authority over a self-custodial wallet, a task more complex than verifying identity on a centralized platform. Operators must also send originator and beneficiary details, such as names and account numbers, alongside every transfer order to the counterparty service provider. All transaction records must be retained for a minimum of five years for regulatory review. During the first two years of that period, the data must be immediately accessible to regulators on demand.
