Texas Senate Race Tightens Amid Funding Debate

The race for a U.S. Senate seat in Texas has intensified, with Republican Ken Paxton raising concerns about the significant campaign funding Democrat James Talarico is receiving from outside the state, while Talarico continues to outraise Paxton overall. The contest, traditionally a Republican stronghold, is now considered a tossup, with recent polling showing the candidates running neck and neck. Paxton, the current Texas Attorney General, has publicly stated that a substantial portion of Talarico's campaign funds originates from states like California, New York, and Illinois. During a recent media appearance, Paxton suggested this influx of out-of-state money indicates an attempt by California to influence the election of a senator in Texas. Campaign finance reports indicate that approximately half of Talarico's funding comes from outside Texas, with California and New York being the largest contributors. About 55 percent of Talarico's itemized contributions are from within Texas, with Travis County being a significant source. In contrast, Paxton has raised approximately $16.8 million since the beginning of 2025, compared to Talarico's cumulative $72 million.
