Texas Rangers investigate Camp Mystic over flood deaths

Texas Rangers are investigating Camp Mystic’s leadership over the deaths during the July 4, 2025, Guadalupe River floods, using 14 court-approved search warrants to examine electronic data linked to the Eastland family and camp staff. The warrants identify possible offenses including manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide, but no criminal charges have been brought. The investigation concerns the camp’s emergency preparations and decisions before and during the flood, which killed 28 people associated with Camp Mystic, according to several accounts. That total includes 25 campers, two counselors and camp co-executive director Dick Eastland. Another description counts 27 girls and counselors, excluding Eastland from that figure. An affidavit by Texas Ranger investigator Brant Johnston alleges that camp leaders monitored flood warnings but did not move children from low-lying cabins to safer locations. It also cites questions about emergency planning, training, staffing and communication. These are investigative allegations, not findings of guilt.
